There aren't many people who know Petramayne well. Part of the reason is her innate shyness, but also, being the daughter of the ruler of the Elven Holt at Crystal Grove doesn't invite close relationships with her own kind. She has learned - the hard way - of the deceit of humans and tends not to trust them too far. Her heart has not yet recovered from the loss of her son. Other races, she believes, are different. Marginally.

Despite her mistrust of humans, she finds them fascinating. They are in such a hurry to get everything done at once. She sometimes wishes, however, that they wouldn't be quite so rude about it. But, as she is prone to remind herself, one can't expect proper manners from a child. Despite this, there is one 'rudeness' she finds comforting. The Elves of the Holt, because of her position, wouldn't dare shorten her name or give her a nickname, even though they do amongst themselves. Her new friends have done just that, preferring to call her 'Petra'. At first, it irritated her, but now she takes it as a sign that she has been accepted by them. It's a heady feeling for her.

Crystal Grove, her home, is unique in Terra Draconius. Once a year, the unicorn, Iridell, appears and heals all those who ask. It is the duty of the Elves to escort Iridell to the Crystal Grove and see that she is kept safe. Petramayne asked to lead the escort this year. Much to her shame, Iridell was captured by goblins and spirited away. Petramayne has finally learned the true secret of Crystal Grove. For one who dislikes subterfuge, it is another secret to keep.

In the course of her adventures, Petramayne comes across someone that thoroughly confounds her. Although not good-looking, by the Elven standards she's used to, Perigian Sarishae fascinates her. He is far more graceful than any other elf she has previously met and far more tolerant. And he laughs kindly, an amusement that lights up his entire face. At first, she thought this MoonElf was sent by her mother as some sort of bodyguard or keeper, or worse, a possible suitor, but she is soon relieved of that worry. Perigian's own lands are far distant and under seige. He has come looking for help.

Perigian helps Petramayne free Iridell and, in the process, introduces her to his father. The ensuing conversation makes Petramayne realize that there are more ways of being alone than just by being born of royalty. To her own surprise, and Perigian's shock, she announces that an alliance between her House and that of the House of Sarishae would not be unfavourable. It would be, she stresses to Perigian later, merely a merging of Houses, an alliance, not an emotional attachment, should it come about. Perigian quietly agrees, stating that such things are better left unspoken until such time as they are both free to make careful consideration of such an alliance.

At the end of this adventure, Petramayne, Perigian, and a rather odd collection of adventurers (one of whom is Petra's son) sets out to free Perigian's home from the Dragon Hordes.
